Gilding Projects:
On occasion, we are asked to undertake exterior/architectural gilding situations. In 2006, a local San Francisco church, in the Chinatown District, had undergone a face-lift. The steeple on the roof was atop a pagoda-style structure. Many years ago, gilding of the structure and steeple began, then was abruptly abandoned midway. Tethering ourselves to the building, we sanded the surfaces to be gilt to a smooth surface. We then applied an ochre undercoat, and re-sanded the surface. Using the oil-gilding method, we applied no less than 6000 individual pages of 23.5K gold to the surface. We anticipate that the steeple will be a gleaming beacon to the neighborhood for the next 25-35 years.
